The Next Big Thing

The Next Big Thing is a game of tag for authors.

The wonderful and prolific author Sally Odgers wrote about her exciting new book Clovie Trefoil - book one of the series The Fairies of Farholt at http://spinningpearls.blogspot.com. Then she tagged me!

I'm answering ten questions today about my own Next Big Thing.

What is the working title of your next book?
Maya and the Daring Heist
- book two of the Maya series.

Where did the idea come from for the project?
Maya and the Crystal Skull
was officially released in January 2012. I always planned to write a series of books based around the main character Maya and the crystal skulls. The idea for Maya and the Daring Heist came from reading about the black market trade in ancient artifacts, as well as my own purchase of a crystal skull over the internet.

What genre does your project fall under?
This is a paranormal action/adventure for confident readers aged 8 and over.

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Maya could be played by Willow Shields from The Hunger Games. Ethan could be played by Callan McAuliffe from I Am Number Four. Now for Maya's dad? Johnny Depp? Brad Pitt? I'm not sure. Maybe Kiefer Sutherland.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your project?
A birthday present for Maya's dad sets in motion unexpected events - smugglers, the black market - and Maya’s life is in jeopardy again!

Will your project be self-funded or is the risk shared by others?
I'm not sure yet. I have a few irons in the fire, so we'll have to wait and see.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Before I started writing I had a goal to write 1,000 words a day, which meant I'd write this 40,000 word manuscript in 40 days. In reality, I finished the first draft in around 45 days.

What other projects would you compare this story to within your genre?
I don't know of any others quite like Maya and the Crystal Skull or Maya and the Daring Heist.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I was inspired to write Maya and the Daring Heist because it's a sequel to Maya and the Crystal Skull. I was inspired to write this series because it involves many of my favorite interests, such as psychic mediums, the ancient Maya, the legend of the crystal skulls, and quantum physics. I love these subjects and enjoy threading them throughout my stories.

What else about the project might pique the reader's interest?
When I wrote Maya and the Crystal Skull I had to do a lot of research about psychic mediums and spirituality. By the time I wrote Maya and the Daring Heist I was writing from my own experience. In November 2010, I had my first experience as a medium. I saw the spirit of a friend's deceased husband. Trust me, no one was more surprised than me! Since November 2010, I've had many fantastic experiences as a psychic medium. I wonder if readers will notice this difference between Maya and the Crystal Skull and Maya and the Daring Heist.

I tagged Wendy Orr for next week and so did Corinne Fenton. Wendy opened Corinne's email first and accepted her offer, then apologized to me. Alas!

And the winner is?

Thank you to everyone who responded to my request for help in choosing a cover for my next novel Maya and the Daring Heist. (Please see previous post.) The response was overwhelming. Thank you so much for generously offering your time and feedback.

I tried to answer the personal emails I received, though I still have a few remaining. I apologize to the wonderful people who left comments on my blog. I fully intended to respond to each and every one of you, but the comments grew and grew and grew. Even if I didn't get a chance to individually thank you, my appreciation goes out to you now as it did when you left your comment. Thank you so much.

In the end I received feedback from 96 individuals. I wasn't expecting such a great response, but I definitely appreciate your warmth and wisdom.

So without further ado, the results are:

Cover 1 received 33 votes or 34% of the votes.

Cover 2 received 26 votes or 27% of the votes.

Cover 3 received 16 votes or 17% of the votes.

Cover 4 received 15 votes or 16% of the votes

Cover 5 received 6 votes or 6% of the votes.

The award for most popular cover goes to Cover 1. Congratulations Cover 1.

And, most importantly, the winner of a copy of the first book in the series Maya and the Crystal Skull... Due to the overwhelming response, I decided to give away 2 copies of Maya and the Crystal Skull - one paperback and one e-book. So you have two chances to win!

The winner is... of the paperback copy of Maya and the Crystal Skull... Michele Darmanin!

The winner is... of the e-book copy of Maya and the Crystal Skull... Liz May!

Congratulations to our winners.

I still haven't decided which cover to use. I'm stuck between Cover 1 and Cover 2. The votes for these two covers were very close. Well, I'll keep you posted and let you know what I decide.

Thanks again to everyone who assisted me by offering feedback on the potential covers for my novel Maya and the Daring Heist. I appreciate and value your help.

Have a positively wonderful week.

Win a Copy of Maya and the Crystal Skull

Welcome to Writing Children's Books with Robyn Opie Parnell and thank you for visiting.

Earlier this year, my novel Maya and the Crystal Skull was released by R & R Books Film Music.
Maya and the Crystal Skull is the first book in a series for confident readers aged 9 and older.

Early in 2013, the second book in the series will be released. The second novel is Maya and the Daring Heist. More on the story later.

Right now, I'm hoping you can do me a favor and help me choose a cover for Maya and the Daring Heist. I have five alternatives, which makes a decision difficult for me. If you let me know your choice of cover either in the comments or via email, I'll greatly appreciate your feedback.

Maya and the Daring Heist is a children's book, so please ask your children to add their vote either in the comments or via email.

To make this activity more interesting, I'm giving away a copy of Maya and the Crystal Skull to a lucky person who votes on the cover by leaving a comment or sending me an email. My husband will randomly choose a winner from the comments/emails on 4 August 2012.

In my opinion, a series should have a consistency in appearance. So to help you pick a cover for the second book, here is the cover for the first one Maya and the Crystal Skull.

To further help you, Maya and the Daring Heist sees our lovely heroine Maya King once again caught up in the adventure of a lifetime when a priceless crystal skull is stolen from the British Museum and Maya is unwittingly used by the thieves to smuggle the crystal skull out of England. When Maya realizes she has a stolen crystal skull in her possession, she wants to return the priceless artifact to the British Museum. The thieves are intent on stopping Maya at any cost.

Now over to the potential covers for Maya and the Daring Heist.

Thank you for entering the competition to win a copy of Maya and the Crystal Skull. More importantly, thank you for helping me to choose the cover for the second book in the series Maya and the Daring Heist. I appreciate your assistance. Thank you so much!

The winner will be announced on this blog between 4 and 6 August 2012. Stay tuned!
